PADLOCK
2019
wrought iron, spring steel, copper, 24K
8.25” x 5.25” x 1.375”

This padlock is forged and filed from wrought iron. Its key is a hollow, concave-triangular construction and is made of three parts - the bow, the stem, and the bit. The user must know the small trick that is part of the unlocking sequence - the lock can not be simply opened by the turn of the key. On the face of the lock is a copper plate ornamented with a hexagonal floral motif in 24K gold. Nunome zogan is used to create this effect, a technique that uses a small chisel and hammer to raise fine teeth on the base material into which thin foil or wire can be set. The rich red color of the copper is achieved by a Japanese patina called rokusho.
