In the process of forging this hammer head, small pieces of carbon steel are forge welded to the body of the hammer (made of wrought iron). The final shape is then forged, and the form and surface are refined with files. Once heat treated, nunome zogan is used to create the 24K gold ornamentation. This technique uses a small chisel and hammer to raise fine teeth on the base material into which thin foil or wire can be set.
